Introduction: Adding New Libraries to KICAD

KiCad is a free software suite for electronic design automation (EDA). It facilitates the design of schematics for electronic circuits and their conversion to PCB designs. It features an integrated environment for schematic capture and PCB layout design. Tools exist within the package to create a bill of materials, artwork, Gerber files, and 3D views of the PCB and its components.

Next, you need to tell KiCad if you want to keep this library specific to the current project or if you want it available globally. Global means all projects can access it. Add an existing KiCad Schematic Library. If you already created a schematic library file, you can “Add Library” and then select Global or Project. The location of your stored Mail messages isn't readily apparent. They’re buried in a folder in the Library, and the archive uses a.mbox file extension. Since there may be times you want to copy your email to another computer or even back up stored messages, here's how to find and access all your stored Mail email files. It's in the middle of the drop-down menu under the 'Home' option. Doing so will open the Library folder in the Finder window. Once you close the Finder window in which the Library folder is open, you can let go of the ⌥ Option key. The kicad work-flow is comprised of two main tasks: making the schematic and laying out the board. Both a components library and a footprints library are necessary for these two tasks. Kicad has plenty of both. Just in case that is not enough, kicad also has the tools necessary to make new ones. You must select the 'Legacy' so KiCad knows how to parse the file. In the library path section, navigate to the location where you previously extracted the ZIP contents where the.mod file should be, then copy and paste the library path. Finally, write down a nickname for your library and click on 'OK'.

• Open Official Kicad Website to download a library to add.

• Select Schematic symbols: https://kicad.github.io/symbols

Step 4: Select a Library

• Scroll down and select the library you need finally download it

For example: I will select 'Amplifier_Audio' library

Note :

when you download the library file you will notice that the file is compressed

you will need to uncompress 'extract' the library files so you can add it to Kicad

Step 5: Open KiCAD

1. Open KICAD.
2. Select the Preferences menu.
3. Then Select Manage Symbol Libraries..

Step 6: Adding the Library

1. Select 'Project Specific Libraries'.
2. Select the Browse button to navigate and select the folder of the library..
3. Select the folder and open it and select the file extended as .lib file extension then press open.
4. Finally Press OK

Setting up Library Loader for use with KiCad

Please note you MUST have Library Loader V2.39 or later to work with the *.kicad_mod files which now include 3D Models.

To prevent these instructions from showing every time you download a part, please uncheck “Show Library Import Instructions” from the KiCad EDA settings in Library Loader. If you want to review these at any point, you can click the Help link in the same dialog.

Steps 1-15 cover a one-time only setup

1 – Change “Your ECAD Tool” in Library Loader to “KiCad EDA” and then click Settings.

3 – Launch KiCad, and then click the “Symbol Editor” button or select “Edit Schematic Symbols” from the Tools menu.

4 – Select “Manage Symbol Libraries…” from the Preferences menu.

5 – Select the Global Libraries tab, and then click the Folder icon.

6 – Select the SamacSys_Parts.lib file from the library directory in step 2 i.e. C:SamacSys_PCB_LibraryKiCadSamacSys_Parts.lib by default and then click Open.

7 – Click OK.

8 – A sample symbol is supplied which can be viewed by double-clicking the NE555DR in the SamacSys_Parts library. Then quit the Symbol Editor.

9 – Click the “Footprint Editor” button or select “Edit PCB Footprints” from the Tools menu.

10 – Select “Manage Footprint Libraries…” from the Preferences menu.

11 – Select the Global Libraries tab, and then click the Folder icon.

12 – Select the SamacSys_Parts.pretty folder from the library directory in step 2 i.e. C:SamacSys_PCB_LibraryKiCad by default and then click OK.

13 – Click OK.

14 – A sample footprint is supplied which can be viewed by double-clicking the NE555DR in the SamacSys_Parts library.

15 – Select 3D Viewer from the View menu to preview the 3D Model on the footprint.

Using Library Loader with KiCad

1 – Search for a part on our or a partners website e.g. https://componentsearchengine.com/ga

2 – Click the ECAD Model download link.

4 – A confirmation message from Library Loader will pop up.

5 – Select Symbol from the Place menu in the Schematic Layout Editor and then click your left mouse button on the schematic.

6 – Select the downloaded part from the SamacSys_Parts library and then click OK. Tip: type “sama” in the Filter to find the SamacSys_Parts library.

7 – The part is complete, and ready to Layout on the Printed Circuit Board with the 3D model.
